Reading and writing aren't just skills - they are the foundation for everything your child will learn and do. Word Slayer gives struggling learners the tools, strategies, and confidence to face the English language and win.
The English language can feel like an enormous, unpredictable beast - especially for a child who processes it differently. Word Slayer is built on one simple but powerful idea: break the beast into its smallest parts, master each one, and nothing is impossible.
This isn't a class about memorizing rules. It's about building a deep understanding of how language works - so your child can read fluently, write confidently, and communicate without the struggle that has held them back.
Every session uses a multi-sensory approach: movement, art, visual prompts, hands-on materials, and sound - because real learning sticks when more than one sense is engaged. Students also build their own personalized reference tools (a Language Arts Binder, Vowel Chart, Affix Chart, and Grammar Chart) that they keep and use long after their class ends.
Skills are taught explicitly and systematically, always building toward the ultimate goal: fluency and accuracy in both reading and writing.
The sounds of language - how they work, how they combine, and how to hear them with precision.
The logic behind spelling - because English has rules, and learning them changes everything.
Word study - roots, prefixes, and suffixes - so students can decode and understand words they've never seen before.
Grammar and sentence structure - how words work together to communicate meaning clearly.
Vocabulary and meaning - building a rich word bank that strengthens both reading comprehension and writing.
Comprehension - connecting words on the page to meaning, context, and higher-level thinking.
Every Word Slayer session is built around principles that put your child's success - not the curriculum's pace - at the center.
Teach to a level of success: I work alongside students until they can find success independently - never leaving them stranded.
Small, slow steps: no one learns to swim by drowning. We build skills in manageable pieces that lead to real mastery.
Multi-sensory learning: art, movement, tactile materials, sound, games, and visual prompts all work together to make learning stick.
Always moving forward, never moving on: constant review ensures nothing falls through the cracks before the next concept is introduced.
A safe and challenging environment: students are free to try, fail, and grow without fear of criticism - because confidence is built here too.
Student-owned resources: every child builds their own reference tools to take home, cementing ownership of their learning.
Stronger, more confident reading and writing skills - built from the ground up.
Genuine confidence in communicating - in writing and out loud.
The ability to get thoughts from mind to page without the exhausting struggle.
Strategies to access the language center of the brain - tools they'll use for life.
The experience of learning in a safe, supportive environment where growth is celebrated.
Private sessions tailored entirely to your child's specific gaps, learning style, and pace. Sessions move at the speed your child needs - no rushing, no falling behind in a group. You'll receive regular updates so you always know what we're working on and how your child is progressing.
Small, intentional class sizes are offered upon demand and seasonally in Davis County, Utah. Students learn alongside peers who are fighting the same dragon - and discover they are not alone. Parents are welcome to stay and observe, and are encouraged to attend if their child's needs are significant, so strategies can be reinforced at home.
"Before taking the class he felt intimidated to even try to read.... I have noticed a huge difference in his confidence and capability and willingness to read and to write. He isn't afraid to read, and when he comes across a word he doesn't know he gets upset with me if I help him too soon. He wants to figure it out on his own."
