FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU FOR CARING AS MUCH AS YOU DO!
The fact that you are visiting NOURISH shows that you are a parent who cares profoundly about the growth and well-being of your child. To love and care for a child is the very heart of NOURISH.
At times, this great love we have can lead to overwhelm. How can we possibly do enough and be enough for our child? We are often very aware of our shortcomings, and we see the chasm between where we are and where we want to be.
NOURISH recognizes this gap and gives you skills and tools to bridge it, so you are able to recognize the progress you are already making.
WHO & WHAT - THE GARDEN ANALOGY
To understand NOURISH, we must first understand who we are and the role we play in our child's life.
You are the Gardener
You are the gardener. You are the one who tends to, cares most about, and knows your child the best.
The Seeds
Your children were given to you as seeds. You don't get to choose what kind of seed you are given. You don't even know what kind of plant it will become.
You only know that you are the gardener and your child is the seed, sent to you to grow.
Our Role, what it is and what it is not
Your job as the gardener is to create an environment where the seed can grow into a mature plant and produce fruit.
Your seed is not an extension of you. It is a living thing with its own mind, body, and heart.
You are a caregiver.
You are connected to the seed by an invisible cord. (Learn more here.) In healthy parent-child relationships, there is an emotional connection that allows the parent to feel how a child is feeling and vice versa. Sometimes these channels are blocked for various reasons, but in a healthy relationship, these bonds are strong. This is intentional. It allows us to care for and protect our child as if they were a part of us, but remember that they are not.
Your seed has as much of a right and responsibility to grow and develop into the seed they already are. And as the gardener, you get a front row seat in watching the seed BECOME!
This concept of establishing and maintaining a healthy attachment while respecting the agency of the seed is essential to effectively understanding and implementing NOURISH.
